Vetropack Group is launching a lighter Rhine wine bottle on the Austrian market. The classic 0.75-litre bottle has been technically redesigned, now weighs just 350 grams and is made from 80 per cent recycled glass.

According to a statement by the glass packaging manufacturer, which is headquartered in Bülach in the Swiss canton of Zurich and is registered in St.Prex in the Swiss canton of Vaud, the lower weight reduces CO2 emissions during production, transport and distribution. Compared with a conventional Rhine wine bottle, the new bottle saves around 33 grams, or 13 per cent, of CO2 emissions per 100 kilometres of transport.

The Rhine wine bottle, which is produced in Austria, retains its previous dimensions. “Reducing the weight of a 750-ml Rhine wine bottle to 350 grams is a significant technological achievement”, Harald Geist of Vetropack is quoted as saying.

Since spring 2026, Vetropack has also been supporting a new reusable wine bottle system in Austria. For this purpose, the company is producing a newly developed reusable Rhine wine bottle for a pool system at its Pöchlarn site. “In addition to CO2 savings of up to 90 percent across the value chain, users also benefit from standardised processes, for example in cleaning and logistics”, Geist explained. ce/as
